Pink Sand Beach, Tikehau, French Polynesia, Australia
Pink Sand Beach is a coastal feature located on the atoll of Tikehau in French Polynesia. It is characterized by its distinctive pink-hued sand.
Visual Characteristics
The sand exhibits a pale pink coloration, derived from crushed coral fragments and the shells of microscopic marine organisms (foraminifera). The beach is a narrow strip bordering a lagoon. The water clarity is high, with a turquoise to deep blue hue depending on depth.
Location & Access Logistics
Pink Sand Beach is situated on the eastern motu (islet) of Tikehau Atoll. Access is primarily via boat from the main village of Tuheiava. Tikehau is accessible by air via Tikehau Airport (TIH), which receives flights from Tahiti. From Tuheiava, local boat operators can arrange transport to the beach, a journey of approximately 15-20 minutes across the lagoon. There is no direct road access. Parking is not applicable as access is by watercraft.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The pink color of the sand is a result of the biological composition of the atoll. The atoll itself is a coral formation, with the pink hue originating from the pulverized shells of red-shelled foraminifera, which are abundant in the surrounding lagoon waters. These microscopic organisms are a food source for parrotfish, which excrete the colored shell fragments.
Key Highlights & Activities
Observation of the unique sand coloration. Swimming and wading in the lagoon. Birdwatching along the shoreline. Photography of the landscape.
Infrastructure & Amenities
There are no permanent structures or amenities directly on Pink Sand Beach. Basic facilities such as restrooms and food vendors are located in the main village of Tuheiava, approximately 15-20 minutes away by boat. Cell phone signal is generally available on the motu, though it may be intermittent.
Best Time to Visit
For optimal lighting conditions for photography, early morning or late afternoon provides softer light. The weather is generally consistent year-round, but the dry season (May to October) offers less humidity and rainfall. High tide is not a critical factor for beach access, but low tide may expose more of the sandbar.
Facts & Legends
The pink color is not uniform across all beaches in French Polynesia; Tikehau's Pink Sand Beach is notable for the intensity of its hue. The foraminifera responsible for the color are also a key component of the atoll's ecosystem.
