Mount Nebo State Park is a public recreation area located atop Mount Nebo, west of the city of Russellville in Pope County, Arkansas.
Visual Characteristics
The park's summit features a plateau covered in mixed deciduous and coniferous forest. Rock outcrops composed of sandstone and shale are visible throughout the park. The elevation reaches approximately 1,350 feet (410 m) above sea level, offering panoramic views of the Arkansas River Valley.
Location & Access Logistics
Mount Nebo State Park is situated 10 miles (16 km) southwest of Russellville, accessible via State Highway 155. The park entrance is clearly marked. Parking is available at designated lots throughout the park, including near the visitor center and picnic areas. No public transportation services directly access the park.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Mount Nebo is an erosional remnant of the Ouachita Mountains, formed by geological uplift and subsequent erosion over millions of years. The park was established in 1928 and developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in the 1930s, which constructed many of the park's initial facilities, including stone structures and trails.

Activities include hiking on 14 miles (23 km) of trails, such as the Bench Trail and the CCC Interpretive Trail. Overnight stays are possible in park cabins or at the campground. Picnicking is permitted at designated sites. Observation points offer views of the surrounding valley.

For photography, early morning and late afternoon provide optimal lighting conditions for landscape views. The months of April through October offer the most pleasant weather for outdoor activities. Fall foliage viewing is particularly notable in October.
Facts & Legends
A local legend suggests that the mountain's name, Nebo, was given by a settler who believed it resembled the biblical Mount Nebo, from which Moses viewed the Promised Land. The CCC constructed a distinctive stone overlook structure at Sunrise Point.
