Construction of Nationals Park began in 2006 and was completed in 2008. It was built on the site of a former industrial area along the Anacostia River. The stadium was designed by HOK Sport + Venue + Event. Its original purpose was to provide a modern home for the Washington Nationals baseball team, replacing the aging RFK Stadium.
