Yards Park is a waterfront public park situated in Southeast Washington, D.C. It is located along the Anacostia River.

Visual Characteristics

The park features a 1,200-foot-long boardwalk constructed from composite decking. It includes a large, tiered lawn area, a water feature with fountains and splash pads, and a pedestrian bridge. The materials used are primarily concrete, steel, and wood-composite. The color palette is neutral, with grays, browns, and greens dominating.

Location & Access Logistics

Yards Park is located at 355 Water Street SE, Washington, D.C. It is approximately 1.5 miles (2.4 km) east of the U.S. Capitol Building. Parking is available in the adjacent Yards Parking Garage (entrance on 3rd Street SE) and other nearby garages. The park is accessible via the DC Circulator bus (Georgetown-Union Station route) and Metrobus routes 70, 74, and P6. The nearest Metro station is Navy Yard-Ballpark (Green Line), approximately 0.5 miles (0.8 km) west.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The site was formerly part of the historic Navy Yard, a U.S. Navy facility established in 1799. The park's development is part of a larger revitalization project of the Anacostia waterfront, transforming former industrial land into public recreational space. The ecological origin relates to the Anacostia River's riparian zone, with efforts made to incorporate native plantings and manage stormwater runoff.

Key Highlights & Activities

Activities include walking and cycling on the boardwalk, picnicking on the lawn, and using the water features (seasonal). The park hosts various public events throughout the year. The pedestrian bridge offers views of the river and the Capitol dome.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available within the park. Shade structures are present in designated areas. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally strong. Food vendors and restaurants are located within the surrounding Yards development.

Best Time to Visit

For photography, early morning or late afternoon provides optimal lighting. The best months for visiting are April through October, when the water features are operational and outdoor activities are most comfortable. The water features operate seasonally, typically from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

Facts & Legends

A unique feature is the "Cascading Lawn," a series of stepped terraces designed to manage stormwater and provide seating. The park's design emphasizes sustainable urban development principles.
