Old Synagogue, Szeged, Hungary, Europe
The Old Synagogue (Régi Zsinagóga) is a historic Neoclassical building that served as the primary place of worship for the Szeged Jewish community prior to the completion of the New Synagogue. Today, it functions primarily as a cultural venue and the headquarters of the Szeged Jewish Community.
Visual Characteristics
The building features a restrained Neoclassical facade with four prominent Doric columns supporting a triangular pediment. The exterior is painted in a muted cream and white palette. Its design is strictly symmetrical, reflecting the architectural sobriety of the early 19th century. The interior, though smaller and less ornate than its successor, maintains a dignified atmosphere with a gallery supported by slender columns and a simple but elegant Torah Ark.

Public Transport: A 3-minute walk from the Gutenberg utca tram stop (Lines 1, 2, and Tram-Train). It is located directly adjacent to the New Synagogue.

Historical Origin
Designed by Henrik Lipovszky and completed in 1843, the Old Synagogue replaced a smaller, temporary prayer house. It was built during a period of rapid growth for the local Jewish population following their legal emancipation in Hungary. For nearly 60 years, it was the center of Jewish life in Szeged until the community outgrew the space, leading to the construction of the New Synagogue next door in 1902.
Key Highlights & Activities
Cultural Hub: The building is a well-known venue for alternative theater, contemporary dance, and classical music concerts due to its excellent acoustics and intimate setting.
Commemorative Plaques: The exterior walls feature plaques honoring the victims of the Holocaust from the Szeged community and commemorating the building's historical status.
The Courtyard: The space between the Old and New Synagogues serves as a quiet memorial garden.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The building is equipped with basic modern lighting and sound systems for performances. 5G cellular coverage is excellent. Facilities like restrooms are available during scheduled events. Due to its age and layout, accessibility for those with limited mobility is restricted to the ground floor.
Best Time to Visit
The exterior is best viewed in the morning. To see the interior, it is necessary to check the schedule of the THEALTER Festival (usually held in July) or other cultural events hosted by the Jewish Community of Szeged.
Facts & Legends
A verified detail: During the 1879 Great Flood of Szeged, the Old Synagogue was one of the few buildings in the lower-lying districts that remained standing, serving as a temporary shelter for those who lost their homes.
