Ontario State Recreation Site is a developed parkland situated along the Snake River in Ontario, Oregon, USA.

Visual Characteristics

The site features a 10-acre reservoir, locally known as the "Old Mill Pond," surrounded by a mix of native grasses and riparian vegetation. The reservoir's water color varies from murky brown to green depending on recent precipitation and algae bloom. The terrain is generally flat with some gently sloping areas leading to the water's edge. Scattered cottonwood trees provide limited shade.

Location & Access Logistics

Ontario State Recreation Site is located approximately 3 miles west of the city center of Ontario, Oregon. Access is via State Highway 201 (SW 4th Avenue) heading south, then turning west onto the unpaved access road marked "State Recreation Site." The access road is approximately 0.5 miles long and is generally passable by standard vehicles in dry conditions. Parking is available in a designated gravel lot near the reservoir's south end. No public transport services directly reach the site.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The reservoir was created as part of an irrigation project in the mid-20th century, utilizing water from the Snake River. The surrounding land is part of the high desert ecosystem of the Owyhee Uplands, characterized by arid conditions and drought-tolerant plant species.

Key Highlights & Activities

Activities include fishing for stocked rainbow trout and channel catfish within the reservoir. Boating is permitted, with a designated launch area for non-motorized craft and small boats. Birdwatching is possible, with species such as waterfowl and raptors observed in the area. Picnicking is available at designated tables.

Infrastructure & Amenities

The site offers a limited number of picnic tables and a vault toilet. There are no potable water sources or food vendors on-site. Cell phone reception is intermittent and generally unreliable.

Best Time to Visit

The best time for fishing is typically in the early morning or late evening, particularly during spring and fall. Summer months can be very hot, with daytime temperatures frequently exceeding 90°F (32°C). The reservoir is accessible year-round, weather permitting.

Facts & Legends

The "Old Mill Pond" name originates from a defunct lumber mill that operated in the vicinity prior to the reservoir's construction. Local lore suggests that during exceptionally dry periods, the reservoir's water level can recede enough to reveal remnants of the mill's foundation.
