The waterfall descends approximately 20 meters over moss-covered rock faces. The water is clear and cool, forming a pool at its base. Surrounding vegetation is dense, consisting of broadleaf trees, ferns, and epiphytes.

Location & Access Logistics

Pachijal Waterfall is located 8 kilometers west of Mindo town center. Access is via the unpaved Mindo-Nambillo road, followed by a 1.5-kilometer dirt track. A 4x4 vehicle is recommended for the final section. Limited parking is available at the trailhead. Public transport to Mindo is available via bus from Quito (approximately 2 hours). From Mindo, local taxis or pre-arranged transport are required.

The waterfall is a result of natural erosion over millennia, carving its path through volcanic rock formations characteristic of the Andean foothills. It is part of the Mindo-Nambillo Cloud Forest, an ecosystem recognized for its high biodiversity, particularly avian species.

Observation of the waterfall from designated viewpoints. Swimming is permitted in the pool at the base during dry seasons. Hiking on marked trails surrounding the cascade. Birdwatching opportunities are present in the adjacent forest.

Best Time to Visit

The best time of day for photography is between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM when sunlight penetrates the canopy. The dry season, from June to November, offers more stable weather conditions. High tide is not a relevant factor for this inland waterfall.

Local folklore suggests the water possesses restorative properties. A specific tip for visitors is to wear insect repellent, as mosquitoes can be prevalent, especially during dawn and dusk.
