Parque das Aves, Iguazu, Argentina, South America
Parque das Aves is a zoological park dedicated to the conservation of Atlantic Rainforest birds, located in Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil, adjacent to Iguazu National Park.
Visual Characteristics
The park features a series of large, walk-through aviaries constructed with metal frames and netting, designed to simulate natural habitats. These aviaries vary in size and height, accommodating different species. Pathways are paved and wind through dense tropical vegetation, including a variety of native trees, ferns, and flowering plants. Water features such as streams and small waterfalls are integrated within the enclosures. The overall aesthetic is one of controlled wilderness, with a focus on replicating the dense foliage and humid environment of the Atlantic Rainforest.
Location & Access Logistics
Parque das Aves is situated approximately 15 kilometers from the center of Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil, along the main road leading to Iguazu Falls (Avenida das Cataratas). The park has a dedicated parking lot for private vehicles. Public transportation is available via the Foz do Iguaçu city bus system; specifically, bus line 120 (Aeroporto/Cataratas) stops directly in front of the park entrance. The journey from the city center typically takes 20-30 minutes by bus.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Founded in 1994 by the P.A.C.E. (Preservação, Ampliação e Conservação de Ecossistemas) organization, Parque das Aves was established with the primary goal of rescuing and rehabilitating birds from illegal trafficking and habitat destruction. It is situated within the biome of the Atlantic Rainforest, one of the most biodiverse and threatened ecosystems in Brazil. The park's design aims to recreate microhabitats representative of this ecological region.
Key Highlights & Activities
Visitors can walk through multiple large aviaries, including the Immersion Aviary, which allows close observation of toucans, macaws, and other species. The Serpentarium houses various reptiles native to the region. Educational presentations about bird behavior and conservation efforts are conducted at scheduled times. Photography is permitted throughout the park. Specific trails lead through different habitat zones, showcasing diverse bird species.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are available at the entrance and at designated points within the park. Shaded areas are provided by the dense tree canopy and some covered seating structures. Cell phone signal (4G) is generally available within the park. Food vendors and a restaurant are located near the park entrance, offering snacks and meals. A gift shop is also present.
Best Time to Visit
The best time of day for observing bird activity is generally in the morning, between 8:00 AM and 11:00 AM, when birds are most active. The months of March through May and September through November offer pleasant weather with lower humidity and moderate temperatures, avoiding the peak summer heat and rainfall. No specific tide requirements are applicable.
Facts & Legends
A unique aspect of the park's design is the "Aviário de Imersão," a massive aviary where visitors can walk amongst free-flying birds, including large macaws and toucans. A specific tip for visitors is to wear insect repellent, as the humid environment can attract mosquitoes.
