Peerd van Ome Loeks, Groningen, Netherlands, Europe

Peerd van Ome Loeks is a white stone statue of a horse and its owner located in the station square of Groningen, Netherlands. It stands directly in front of the Groningen Main Station as a primary landmark for commuters and tourists entering the city center.

Visual Characteristics

The sculpture is made of white quartz concrete and depicts a life-sized horse standing beside a man in traditional working attire. The figures are characterized by smooth, rounded contours and a lack of intricate facial detailing, reflecting a mid-century minimalist aesthetic. The statue is mounted on a low rectangular stone plinth and measures approximately 2.1 meters in height.

Location & Access Logistics

The landmark is situated at Stationsplein, 9726 AE Groningen, 0.8 kilometers south of the Grote Markt. It is immediately accessible from the Groningen Main Station, which serves as a hub for NS and Arriva trains. Numerous regional bus lines terminate at the adjacent bus station. Vehicle parking is available in the underground "Parkeergarage Q-Park Museum Centrum" located 200 meters to the north.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The statue was created by sculptor Jan de Baat and unveiled in 1959. It was commissioned to commemorate a popular local folk song about the death of a horse belonging to a local character known as "Uncle Loeks" (Lucas van Hemmen), a horse butcher and stable owner who lived in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Key Highlights & Activities

The site serves as a central meeting point for pedestrians and cyclists. Photography is the primary activity, as the statue is positioned to capture the historic 1896 neo-Renaissance station building in the background. The surrounding square is a high-traffic transit zone with integrated bicycle lanes.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Public restrooms are located inside the adjacent train station (paid access). The square is open-air with no overhead shade, though 5G cellular signal is strong throughout the area. Benches are located on the periphery of the square. Multiple food vendors, cafes, and a convenience store operate within the station building 30 meters away.

Best Time to Visit

The statue is visible 24 hours a day and is illuminated by street lighting at night. For photography, mid-morning provides the most direct light on the statue's southern face. May through September offers the most favorable weather for standing in the exposed square.

Facts & Legends

Local legend suggests that the real "Ome Loeks" was actually saddened by the death of his horse, contrary to the upbeat rhythm of the folk song. A common tip for visitors is that the statue has been moved multiple times due to station renovations, and its current placement is designed to align with the central axis of the station's main entrance.
