Regensburg Cathedral, Regensburg, Germany, Europe
Regensburg Cathedral (Dom St. Peter) is the primary landmark of Regensburg and the most significant example of Gothic architecture in Bavaria. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Visual Characteristics
The cathedral is a high-Gothic basilica featuring two massive open-work spires that reach a height of 105 meters. The exterior is constructed from limestone and green sandstone, heavily decorated with stone figures and gargoyles. The interior is characterized by its verticality, narrow nave, and exceptionally well-preserved medieval stained glass.
Location & Access Logistics
Located at Domplatz 1, 93047 Regensburg.
Public Transit: 10-minute walk from Regensburg Hauptbahnhof. Located in the center of the pedestrian zone.
Access: Entry to the nave is free. Guided tours of the cloister and treasury require a ticket.
Hours: Daily 6:30 AM – 6:00 PM (Summer); until 5:00 PM (Winter). Restricted during services.
Parking: Use "Parkhaus am Dachauplatz" or "Parkhaus Petersweg."
Historical Origin
The current Gothic structure was started around 1273, replacing earlier Romanesque buildings. Construction continued for centuries, but the characteristic spires were only completed between 1859 and 1869 under the orders of King Ludwig I of Bavaria. It remains the only Gothic cathedral in the region modeled after French cathedral architecture.
Key Highlights & Activities
Stained Glass: A vast collection of original 13th- and 14th-century windows, creating a unique "dimmed" light characteristic of high-Gothic interiors.
The Smiling Angel: Part of the "Annunciation Group" by the Erminold Master, featuring two stone sculptures with unusually expressive facial features.
Regensburger Domspatzen: The world-famous boys' choir. They typically perform during Sunday High Mass (10:00 AM).
Cathedral Treasury (Domschatz): Located in the former episcopal residence, housing gold crosses, monstrances, and medieval textiles.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The main cathedral floor is wheelchair accessible. The historic cloisters and the treasury involve some steps. Photography is allowed without flash. 5G signal is stable in the Domplatz area.
Best Time to Visit
Sunday Morning (10:00 AM): To hear the Domspatzen choir.
Late Afternoon: To view the sunlight through the medieval stained glass on the west facade.
Facts & Legends
A technical oddity is the Silver High Altar, a masterpiece of Baroque silversmithing that was produced in several stages between 1695 and 1785. Legend states that the "Smiling Angel" was carved by a sculptor who was so happy with the cathedral's progress that he couldn't help but give the stone figure a joyful expression-a rarity in somber medieval art.
