Old Stone Bridge (Steinerne Brücke) is a 12th-century arched bridge crossing the Danube, connecting Regensburg’s Old Town with the district of Stadtamhof. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Visual Characteristics
The bridge features 15 massive stone arches (originally 16) built of green sandstone and limestone. It is characterized by its heavy, fortress-like piers and a prominent central gate tower (Brückturm). The structure spans approximately 310 meters and is slightly curved to withstand the river’s current.

Built between 1135 and 1146, it was considered a miracle of medieval engineering. For over 800 years, it was the only stone bridge across the Danube from Ulm to Vienna. It served as the model for other famous bridges, including the Charles Bridge in Prague. It underwent a massive multi-year restoration concluded in 2018 to stabilize the foundations.

Facts & Legends
A technical oddity is the massive artificial islands (Inseln) built around the piers to protect them from ice floes and debris; these are responsible for the dangerous river currents below. Legend claims the bridge builder made a pact with the Devil to finish before the Cathedral builder. The Devil requested the first three souls to cross. The builder tricked him by sending a dog, a rooster, and a hen across first.
