Visual Characteristics
The main hall, known as the Rengeo-in, is a long wooden structure measuring 120 meters (390 feet) in length. It is constructed primarily of cypress wood. The exterior is painted a muted, natural wood tone. Inside, the hall houses 1,001 life-sized statues of Kannon, the goddess of mercy, arranged in ten rows of 100. Each statue is carved from Japanese cypress and features a slightly different facial expression. The central statue is larger and depicts Kannon with eleven faces and one thousand arms.

The temple is a short walk from the bus stop. Limited paid parking is available on-site for visitors arriving by car.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The temple was originally founded in 1164 by Taira no Kiyomori. The current structure dates from 1266, following a fire that destroyed the original building. The primary purpose of the temple is to house the statues of Kannon and serve as a place of worship.
Key Highlights & Activities
Visitors can observe the 1,001 statues of Kannon within the main hall. Photography is prohibited inside the main hall. The temple grounds also feature a small garden and a pagoda.

Facts & Legends
A unique tradition at Sanjusangendo is the annual archery contest, Toshiya, held on the second Sunday of January. Participants shoot arrows from the eastern veranda of the main hall towards a target at the western end, a distance of 120 meters. This event has been held since the Edo period, though its origins date back much further.
