Shaki Waterfall, Goris, Armenia, Asia
Shaki Waterfall is a tiered waterfall located in the Syunik Province of Armenia, near the town of Goris.
Visual Characteristics
The waterfall descends over basalt columns, forming multiple cascades. The water is typically clear, and the surrounding rock faces are dark grey to black basalt. The height of the main drop is approximately 18 meters (59 feet).
Location & Access Logistics
Shaki Waterfall is situated approximately 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) north of Goris. Access is via the M17 highway. Turn off the highway onto a paved road leading directly to the waterfall. Parking is available at a designated lot near the base of the falls. Public transport options to Goris are available, from which local taxis or pre-arranged transport can be used to reach the waterfall.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The waterfall is formed by the Shaki River, which flows through a canyon of volcanic origin. The basalt formations are a result of ancient lava flows that have been eroded over time by the river. The river's flow rate varies seasonally.
Key Highlights & Activities
Observation platforms are present at different levels, providing views of the cascades. Walking paths allow access to the base of the waterfall. Swimming is not recommended due to strong currents and cold water temperatures.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are available at the parking area. Limited shade is provided by natural rock overhangs. Cell phone signal (4G) is generally available. Food vendors are typically present during peak tourist seasons.
Best Time to Visit
The waterfall is most voluminous during spring (April-May) due to snowmelt. For photography, late afternoon light offers direct illumination on the cascades. The site is accessible year-round, though winter conditions may affect access.
Facts & Legends
Local legend states the waterfall is named after a beautiful woman named Shaki who jumped from the cliff to escape an attacker, her flowing dress creating the waterfall. Geologically, the basalt columns are a significant feature, formed by slow cooling of lava.
