Tatev Swinging Column, Goris, Armenia, Asia

The Tatev Swinging Column is a gravity-defying monolith located near the Tatev Monastery in the Syunik Province of Armenia.

Visual Characteristics

The column is a single, unworked stone pillar, approximately 5 meters in height and 0.5 meters in diameter. Its surface is rough and irregular, exhibiting the natural texture of the local basalt. The stone is dark grey to black in color.

Location & Access Logistics

The column is situated 2 kilometers southwest of the Tatev Monastery. Access is via a dirt track branching off the M17 highway. The track is passable by standard vehicles in dry conditions. Parking is available at the base of the track. Public transport does not directly service this location; visitors typically arrive by private vehicle or taxi from Goris, which is 25 kilometers to the north.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The column is a natural geological formation, believed to be a result of volcanic activity and subsequent erosion. It is composed of basalt, a common extrusive igneous rock. Its precise age is not documented but is estimated to be several million years old.

Key Highlights & Activities

Visitors can observe the column's precarious balance. The primary activity is visual inspection and photography. The surrounding area offers opportunities for short walks.

Infrastructure & Amenities

There are no dedicated facilities at the site. Restrooms, food vendors, and cell phone signal are absent. Shade is minimal, provided only by sparse surrounding vegetation.

Best Time to Visit

For optimal lighting conditions for photography, visit during the early morning or late afternoon when the sun is at a lower angle. The dry season, from May to October, offers the most reliable access due to road conditions.

Facts & Legends

Local folklore suggests the column was placed by giants. A more practical observation is its remarkable stability despite its apparent precariousness, a testament to its geological composition and the surrounding bedrock.
