Historical & Ecological Origin
Construction of St. Thomas Tower commenced in 1614, commissioned by Grand Master Alof de Wignacourt. It was designed by engineers of the Order of St. John as one of the Wignacourt Towers, intended to defend the southeastern Maltese coast from Ottoman raids and corsairs. In the 18th century, the tower was significantly modified and converted into an artillery battery, enhancing its defensive capabilities.
