Parking is restricted within the immediate vicinity of the square; visitors are advised to use public transportation. The square is approximately 2km south of the city center.

The square's origins trace back to the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644) when it was part of the Imperial City. It was significantly expanded and redesigned in the 1950s following the establishment of the People's Republic of China. The Tiananmen Gate itself dates to 1417.
