Visual Characteristics

The memorial complex consists of a central spire and a circular memorial hall. The spire, known as the "Vigil of the Revived Armenia," is 30 meters high and constructed from reinforced concrete. The memorial hall is a circular structure with a conical roof, also made of reinforced concrete. Inside the hall, a perpetual flame burns in a granite sarcophagus. The exterior is faced with dark basalt stone. The surrounding parkland features a memorial alley with trees planted by dignitaries.

Location & Access Logistics

Tsitsernakaberd is situated on a hill overlooking Yerevan, approximately 3 kilometers west of the city center. Access is via Tsitsernakaberd Highway. Ample parking is available at the site. Public transport options include bus routes 17 and 27, which stop near the memorial entrance. The walk from the bus stop to the memorial is approximately 500 meters uphill.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Construction of the memorial began in 1965 and was completed in 1967. The architects were Arthur Tarkhanyan and Sashur Kalashyan, with landscape design by Levon Gevorgyan. The original purpose was to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. The site itself is a natural elevation within the city, offering a panoramic view.

Key Highlights & Activities

Visitors can walk through the memorial hall to view the perpetual flame. The Alley of Remembrance allows for reflection. The Tsitsernakaberd Genocide Museum, located underground, provides detailed historical context and exhibits. Photography is permitted in the outdoor areas but restricted within the museum and memorial hall.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available within the museum complex. Limited shaded areas are present in the park. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally good within the complex. No food vendors are located directly at the memorial; dining options are available in the city center.

Best Time to Visit

For optimal lighting for photography of the exterior, late afternoon is recommended. The best months for visiting are April through October, when weather conditions are generally mild. No specific tide requirements apply.

Facts & Legends

A unique aspect of the memorial is the Alley of Remembrance, where world leaders and notable figures have planted trees. The perpetual flame is fueled by natural gas and has burned continuously since its installation. A lesser-known fact is that the design was chosen from a competition, with the winning proposal emphasizing simplicity and solemnity.
