Access is primarily via a rough, unpaved track that branches off the main island road approximately 15 kilometers from the administrative center of Taiohae. The track is approximately 3 kilometers long and is suitable for 4x4 vehicles only. Parking is available at the end of the track, with space for approximately 5-7 vehicles. There are no public transport services directly to the bay.

Vaiea Bay is a natural formation, a drowned river valley (ria) carved by erosion over millennia. The surrounding cliffs are composed of basaltic lava flows from ancient volcanic activity.
