The Vermeer Centrum Delft is an information center and museum dedicated to the life and work of the Dutch Master painter Johannes Vermeer. It is located in the historic building of the former St. Lucas Guild on the Voldersgracht in the center of Delft.

The building features a traditional Dutch brick facade with large multi-paned windows and a red-tiled roof. Public transport users can take tram line 1 or 19 to the "Prinsenhof" stop, located 400 meters away. Vehicle access is restricted in the immediate vicinity; the nearest parking is at the Marktgarage or Prinsenhof parking facilities.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The building stands on the site of the former St. Lucas Guild, where Vermeer served as dean multiple times during the 17th century. While the original guild house was demolished in the 19th century, the current structure was renovated and opened as the Vermeer Centrum in 2007. The site is located along one of Delft's oldest canals, the Voldersgracht, which was historically used by cloth fullers in the textile industry.

The best time for a quiet experience is on weekday mornings immediately after opening at 10:00. For photography of the facade and the Voldersgracht canal, the late afternoon provides the most favorable lighting from the west. The center is open daily from 10:00 to 17:00, with no seasonal closures, making it a reliable year-round destination.

Facts & Legends

A unique feature of the museum is that it is the only place in the world where all of Vermeer's works can be seen in one location, albeit as reproductions. A local historical oddity is that Vermeer’s father, Reynier Jansz, worked in the same building as a silk weaver and art dealer. Legend holds that Vermeer used a secret room in his house nearby to perfect his camera obscura techniques, a theory explored in depth within the center’s basement studio.
