Zaanse Schans
The Zaanse Schans is an open-air conservation area and historical site located in Zaandam, approximately 15 km north of Amsterdam. It is a reconstructed 18th and 19th-century Dutch village designed to preserve the industrial heritage of the Zaan region.
Visual Characteristics
The site is defined by its collection of green-painted wooden houses and functional industrial windmills situated along the banks of the Zaan River. The architecture features distinctive Zaan-style gables and white-trimmed windows. The landscape is a classic Dutch polder, characterized by flat peat meadows and narrow drainage canals.

Historical & Industrial Origin
The Zaan district was the world's first industrial area. In the 17th century, over 600 windmills operated here simultaneously. The Zaanse Schans was created between 1961 and 1974 by transporting endangered historic buildings and windmills from across the region to this centralized site to protect them from urban expansion.
