Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium, Tamale, Ghana, Africa
The Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium is a multi-purpose athletic facility located in the northern sector of Tamale, Ghana. It serves as a primary venue for football matches and international sporting events in the Northern Region, featuring a seating capacity of approximately 20,000.
Visual Characteristics
The stadium is a modern reinforced concrete structure with a distinctive bowl-shaped design. The exterior is characterized by white and grey masonry panels, while the interior features tiered seating sections colored in the national hues of red, gold, and green. The facility includes a natural grass pitch surrounded by a professional-grade eight-lane synthetic running track and four high-intensity floodlight pylons.
Location & Access Logistics
The stadium is situated on the Tamale-Bolgatanga Road (N10 highway), approximately 4km north of the Tamale city center. It is accessible via private vehicle, taxi, or yellow-yellow (auto-rickshaw) from the central market area. A large paved parking lot is located on the western side of the complex for private cars and team buses. The facility is a 20-minute drive from the Tamale International Airport.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The stadium was commissioned in 2008 as one of the venues for the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) and was constructed by the Shanghai Construction Group. Originally known as the Tamale Sports Stadium, it was renamed in 2017 to honor Alhaji Aliu Mahama, a former Vice President of Ghana. The site occupies a flat savannah plain characterized by laterite soil and low-density vegetation typical of the Guinea Savannah zone.
Key Highlights & Activities
The facility primarily hosts Ghana Premier League football matches and international fixtures for the Black Stars. Additional activities include track and field competitions, regional school games, and large-scale musical concerts. The stadium interior also houses offices for the National Sports Authority and specialized training gyms for local athletes.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The stadium is equipped with VIP lounges, media centers, and four locker rooms for players. Public amenities include multiple restroom blocks located under the grandstands and a perimeter of ticket booths. Shade is limited to the roofed VIP and media sections, while the majority of the spectator stands are open-air. 4G/5G cellular signal is strong throughout the complex, and independent food vendors operate outside the gates during match days.
Best Time to Visit
The best time for photography is during the late afternoon (16:30–17:30) when the stadium exterior is illuminated by the sunset. For stadium tours or athletic training, morning hours (08:00–10:00) offer lower temperatures. The peak period for attendance is during the football season (September–June), though the dry season (November–March) provides the most reliable weather for outdoor events.
Facts & Legends
The stadium is noted for its "fast" synthetic track, which has become a preferred training ground for West African sprinters. Local sports fans often refer to the venue as a "fortress" due to the historically high win-rate of the Ghanaian national team when playing at this location. It remains the only stadium in Northern Ghana built to full FIFA and IAAF international standards.
