Savannah Centre for Contemporary Art (SCCA), Tamale, Ghana, Africa

The Savannah Centre for Contemporary Art (SCCA) is an artist-run exhibition space and research hub located in the industrial area of Tamale, Ghana. It serves as a dedicated platform for the preservation and exhibition of 20th-century Ghanaian art and the promotion of contemporary West African practices.

Visual Characteristics

The facility is a repurposed industrial warehouse characterized by high-volume ceilings, white-washed gallery walls, and an open-plan layout. The exterior features a minimalist concrete facade with large metal entrance doors and a gravel forecourt. The interior design emphasizes natural light and modular partition walls, allowing for the installation of large-scale sculptural works and multimedia exhibitions.

Location & Access Logistics

SCCA is situated in the light industrial area of Tamale, approximately 3km north of the central business district. It is located just off the Tamale-Bolgatanga Road (N10 highway). Access is available via private vehicle or "yellow-yellow" (auto-rickshaw) from the city center. A small, unpaved parking area is located directly in front of the gallery entrance, and the site is within walking distance of several regional bus terminals.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The center was founded in 2019 by artist Ibrahim Mahama as a non-profit institution. It was established to address the lack of archival and exhibition infrastructure in Northern Ghana. The site occupies a former commercial storage zone, reflecting an urban ecological strategy of "adaptive reuse" where existing industrial skeletons are converted into cultural assets to minimize new construction waste.

Key Highlights & Activities

The center hosts major retrospective exhibitions of pioneering Ghanaian artists, many of whom have not been previously documented in a formal museum setting. Activities include curated gallery tours, public lectures, and film screenings. The facility also houses an extensive art library and archive that is accessible to students, researchers, and the general public for academic study.

Infrastructure & Amenities

The facility includes a primary exhibition hall, a dedicated library annex, and a small office space. Public restrooms are available inside the main building. While the interior is naturally ventilated, the high ceilings provide a relatively cool environment compared to the outdoor savannah heat. Reliable 4G/5G cellular signal is available, though there are no on-site food vendors; refreshments are available in the surrounding industrial district.

Best Time to Visit

The center is open Tuesday through Sunday, typically from 09:00 to 18:00. The best time to visit is during the mid-morning (10:00–12:00) when the gallery is quietest. For photography, the interior lighting is most consistent during midday. Visiting during the launch of a new exhibition cycle (usually twice a year) offers the opportunity to engage with visiting curators and artists.

Facts & Legends

SCCA is the first project in a tripartite network that includes Red Clay Studio and Nkrumah Voli-ni; it is often described as the "intellectual anchor" of the trio. A local point of pride is that the center operates entirely on a "free entry" basis, a policy designed to demystify contemporary art for the local Tamale community and encourage cross-generational participation.
