Alpaca Farm, Mitzpe Ramon, Israel, Asia
The Alpaca Farm is a unique agricultural and tourist site located on a high plateau in the Negev, approximately 4 kilometers west of Mitzpe Ramon. Established in 1987, it is home to a large herd of alpacas and llamas originally imported from the Andes Mountains in South America.
Visual Characteristics
The farm is situated in a rugged desert landscape characterized by open, rolling hills and stony terrain. The architecture is rustic, featuring stone cabins, wooden yurts, and open-air enclosures that blend into the earth-toned surroundings. Large herds of long-necked, woolly alpacas and llamas roam the fenced pastures, creating an alpine-desert hybrid aesthetic. At night, the lack of light pollution makes the farm a prime location for viewing the dense star fields of the Negev sky.
Location & Access Logistics
The farm is reached via a 4-kilometer partially paved road (sometimes turning into a well-maintained dirt track) that begins on the western edge of Mitzpe Ramon. It is a 5-to-10-minute drive from the town center. While most visitors arrive by car, the farm is accessible to determined hikers and mountain bikers from the desert rim. Visitors should follow signs for the "Alpaca Farm" or "Wise Observatory." Public transport does not go directly to the farm, but taxis are available from the Mitzpe Ramon bus station.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The farm was founded by Ilan and Naama Dvir, who undertook a complex logistical operation to bring the animals to Israel to establish a wool industry in the desert. Historically, the project represents a modern example of "making the desert bloom" through unconventional agriculture. Geologically, the farm sits on the Negev highlands at an altitude of approximately 900 meters. The cool, dry mountain air is ecologically similar to the animals' native Andean habitat, allowing them to thrive and produce high-quality wool despite the Middle Eastern location.
Key Highlights & Activities
Animal Feeding: Visitors receive bags of specialized food at the entrance and can feed the alpacas and llamas by hand.
The Wool House: A gallery and workshop where visitors can learn about the process of shearing, spinning, and weaving alpaca wool into clothing and yarn.
Llama Treks: Guided "picnic treks" where llamas carry the gear and supplies while visitors lead them on trails along the crater’s rim.
Horseback Riding: The farm maintains a stable of horses for guided rides into the desert landscape and toward the edge of the Ramon Crater.
The Shearing Festival: An annual event, typically during Passover (Spring), where the public can watch the professional shearing of the herd.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The site is a working farm that also functions as a "farm-stay" resort. It offers diverse accommodations ranging from cozy stone cabins to luxury yurts and a glamping section. Amenities include a small coffee bar serving hot drinks and snacks, a gift shop for wool products, and a yoga studio. The facility is partially ADA-compliant, with accessible parking and level paths around the main feeding areas, though some of the desert trails are uneven. Full 5G cellular coverage is available.
Best Time to Visit
The farm is generally open to visitors Thursday through Sunday (09:00–18:00) and daily during school holidays. The best time to visit is spring (March–May) to catch the shearing season and enjoy the desert bloom. Early mornings are recommended to witness the animals being released into the pastures. Because of the high altitude, winter visits can be quite chilly, requiring warm layers.
Facts & Legends
A historical oddity is that the original herd was flown from Chile to Israel in a chartered cargo plane, a feat that required special diplomatic and veterinary coordination. Local legend at the farm says that the llamas are the "guardians" of the herd and will "adopt" any hikers they encounter on the nearby trails, sometimes following them for several kilometers until they are safely back near the farm perimeter.
