Private 4x4 vehicle hire is the most common transport method, as public transport options are limited to bush taxis (taxi-brousse) that may not go directly to the reserve entrance. Parking is available at the main visitor center.

Its primary purpose is the conservation of the critically endangered Perrier's sifaka (Propithecus perrieri) and its unique transitional forest ecosystems, which bridge the dry western and humid eastern forest types of Madagascar.
