Angkor Borei is an archaeological site located in Takeo Province, Cambodia. It is considered one of the earliest urban centers in Cambodia.

Visual Characteristics

The site consists of earthen ramparts and moats that define its ancient city layout. Excavations have revealed brick structures and stone artifacts. The surrounding landscape is predominantly flat, characterized by rice paddies and agricultural land.

Location & Access Logistics

Angkor Borei is situated approximately 10 kilometers south of Takeo town. Access is primarily via National Road 2, turning onto local roads leading to the site. Travel time from Phnom Penh is approximately 2-3 hours by car. Parking is available on-site, with informal arrangements for vehicles. Local boats can also be hired from Takeo town to reach the site, particularly during the wet season when water levels are higher.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Angkor Borei was a significant political and commercial center from at least the 1st century CE, predating the Angkorian Empire. It is believed to have been the capital of the Kingdom of Funan. The site's location on the Tonle Bassac river system facilitated trade and agriculture.

Key Highlights & Activities

Visitors can observe the remnants of ancient city walls and moats. Archaeological excavations are ongoing, and artifacts are often displayed at the small on-site museum. Boat tours on the surrounding canals offer a different perspective of the landscape. The site is suitable for historical exploration and photography.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Basic restroom facilities are available near the entrance. Shade is limited, primarily provided by scattered trees. Cell phone signal (4G) is generally available. Food vendors are typically present near the main access points, offering local snacks and drinks.

Best Time to Visit

The dry season, from November to April, offers the most comfortable conditions for visiting. Early morning or late afternoon provides optimal lighting for photography, avoiding the midday sun. High tide is not a specific requirement for site access.

Facts & Legends

Angkor Borei is sometimes referred to as the "cradle of Cambodian civilization." Local folklore suggests that the site was once a much larger city, with much of it now submerged due to changes in the river course over centuries.
