Ta Prohm of Tonle Bati, Takeo, Cambodia, Asia

Ta Prohm of Tonle Bati is a 11th-century Khmer temple located in Takeo Province, Cambodia.

It is situated approximately 35 kilometers south of Phnom Penh.

Visual Characteristics

The temple complex is constructed primarily from sandstone. It features a central sanctuary with a single tower, surrounded by galleries and courtyards. Architectural elements include lintels, pediments, and pilasters carved with Hindu deities and mythological scenes. Overgrown tree roots from large fig and silk-cotton trees have integrated with the stonework, particularly on the western side of the main sanctuary.

Location & Access Logistics

Access is via National Road 2 (NR2) south from Phnom Penh for approximately 30 kilometers, then turning east onto a local road for about 5 kilometers to reach Tonle Bati. The site is accessible by private vehicle or taxi. Public bus routes do not directly serve the temple; local tuk-tuks or motorcycle taxis are available from the nearest town. Parking is available on-site.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Ta Prohm of Tonle Bati was constructed during the reign of Suryavarman I in the early 11th century. It was originally dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu. The temple's integration with the surrounding forest is a result of natural overgrowth over centuries, a characteristic shared with other Angkorian temples.

Key Highlights & Activities

Exploration of the temple ruins is the primary activity. Visitors can examine the stone carvings and observe the interaction between the temple structures and the encroaching vegetation. The site is also adjacent to Tonle Bati lake, where visitors can engage in boat rides or relax at local eateries.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available at the site. Shade is provided by the temple structures and surrounding trees. Cell phone signal (4G) is generally available. Food vendors and small restaurants are located near the entrance and along the lakefront.

Best Time to Visit

The best time of day for photography is in the morning or late afternoon when the sunlight creates distinct shadows on the stone carvings. The dry season, from November to April, offers the most favorable weather conditions. There are no tide-dependent activities at this location.

Facts & Legends

Unlike its more famous namesake in Siem Reap, Ta Prohm of Tonle Bati is less visited, offering a quieter experience. Local lore suggests that the temple was a place of royal retreat and religious ceremonies for the Khmer kings.
