Historical & Ecological Origin
Bear Lake was formed by glacial activity during the Pinedale glaciation period, approximately 20,000 years ago. The valley was carved by glaciers, and the lake basin was scoured and shaped by ice. It is classified as a proglacial lake, formed in a depression left by retreating glaciers.
Key Highlights & Activities
Hiking trails originate from the Bear Lake Trailhead. The Bear Lake Nature Trail is a 0.6-mile paved loop around the lake. The Emerald Lake Trail is a 3.2-mile roundtrip hike that passes Nymph Lake and Dream Lake before reaching Emerald Lake. The Sky Pond Trail is a more strenuous 9.0-mile roundtrip hike accessible via the Loch Vale Trail. Photography is a common activity, particularly during sunrise and sunset for lighting conditions. Fishing is permitted with a valid Colorado fishing license.

Cell phone signal is intermittent and generally unreliable within the immediate vicinity of the lake and trailhead. Food vendors are not present at the trailhead; visitors should bring their own provisions. A visitor information kiosk is located at the trailhead.
Best Time to Visit
For photography, early morning (sunrise) and late afternoon (sunset) offer optimal lighting. The best months for visiting are July through September, offering generally clear weather and accessible trails. Snow can persist on higher elevation trails into June. High tide is not applicable to this alpine lake. Low tide is also not applicable.
Facts & Legends
