The Bear's Paw Mountains Scenic Area is situated approximately 20 miles south of Havre, Montana. Access is primarily via County Road 228 (also known as Bear Paw Road), which is a gravel surface road. From Havre, take US Highway 87 South for approximately 15 miles, then turn east onto County Road 228. Parking is available at designated pull-offs and trailheads. No public transport services this area.

These mountains are part of the Rocky Mountain Front, formed by Laramide orogeny uplift and subsequent erosion.
