The gravel road is passable by most standard vehicles, though high clearance is recommended during the rainy season. Parking is available on an unpaved area adjacent to the monument site. Public transport to the vicinity is limited; local tap-taps (shared taxis) operate on RN1, requiring a subsequent walk or arrangement for local transport to the monument itself.

The Bois Caiman site is historically significant as the location of a secret meeting on August 14, 1791. This assembly, led by Dutty Boukman and Cécile Fatiman, is considered the catalyst for the Haitian Revolution. The area is part of the tropical dry forest ecosystem characteristic of northern Haiti.
