Hohenbaden Castle (Altes Schloss) is a medieval castle ruin located on the western slope of the Battert rock formation, overlooking Baden-Baden.
Visual Characteristics
The site consists of extensive stone ruins featuring multiple courtyards, defensive walls, and several accessible towers. It is characterized by its dramatic verticality, built directly into the porphyry cliffs. The upper castle offers a 360-degree panoramic view of the Rhine Valley and the Black Forest.
Location & Access Logistics
Located at Alter Schloßweg 10, 76530 Baden-Baden.
Public Transit: Bus line 208 to stop "Altes Schloss".
Pedestrian Access: A steep but well-marked hiking trail leads from the city center (approx. 45 minutes).

Historical Origin
Built around 1100 AD by the Margraves of Baden. It served as the official residence of the Margraves until the late 15th century. After the family moved to the "New Castle" (Neues Schloss) closer to the thermal springs, Hohenbaden was destroyed by a major fire in 1599 and never rebuilt, remaining a ruin for over 400 years.
Key Highlights & Activities
The Knight’s Hall: Large remains of the representative social hall.
Observation Tower: A modern staircase leads to the top of the main tower for the highest vantage point in the immediate area.
Aeolian Harp: Located in the ruins of the Knights' Hall, this massive wind harp (installed in 1999) produces ethereal musical tones when the wind passes through its strings.
Battert Rocks: The castle is the starting point for various climbing routes and the Battert Circular Path, a popular scenic hiking trail.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The site features the Restaurant Altes Schloss, which includes a large beer garden with valley views. While the ground-level courtyards are accessible, the towers and upper fortifications require navigating narrow, steep stone stairs. 5G signal is stable.
Best Time to Visit
Sunset: For unobstructed views of the sun dipping below the Vosges Mountains in France.
Windy Days: To hear the unique acoustic phenomenon of the Aeolian Harp.
Facts & Legends
A technical oddity is the architectural integration; the castle builders used the natural rock chimneys and crevices of the Battert cliffs as part of the defensive layout. Legend states that the Margravine Katharina von Lothringen once saved the castle from a siege by praying for a miracle, which manifested as a sudden, violent storm that drove the attackers away.
