Friedrichsbad is a traditional Roman-Irish thermal bath house located in the historic center of Baden-Baden.

Visual Characteristics

The building is a Renaissance-style palace constructed from red sandstone. The interior is characterized by opulent 19th-century architecture, including hand-painted Majolica tiles, marble columns, and a central circular pool housed under a high, ornate dome.

Location & Access Logistics

Located at Römerplatz 1, 76530 Baden-Baden.

Access: Strictly textile-free (naked). Towels and slippers are provided.

Structure: Follows a fixed 17-station circuit of varying temperatures.

Hours: Daily 9:00 AM – 10:00 PM (Last entry 3 hours before closing).

Age Restriction: Minimum age for entry is 14 years.

Admission: Paid; separate rates for the basic circuit and the circuit including a soap-and-brush massage.

Historical Origin

Opened in 1877, it was considered the most modern bathing establishment in Europe at the time. It was built atop the ruins of ancient Roman bath excavations. The "Roman-Irish" concept combines the Roman tradition of humid steam baths with the Irish tradition of dry hot-air baths.

Key Highlights & Activities

The 17 Stations: A sequential bathing process involving dry air, steam, thermal pools of varying temperatures, and a final cooling-down period.

Soap-and-Brush Massage: A traditional skin-cleansing treatment performed by staff as part of the circuit.

The Cupola Hall: Station 11, featuring a thermal pool located directly beneath the 18-meter-high dome.

Reading Room: A quiet final station where guests are wrapped in blankets to rest.

Infrastructure & Amenities

The facility maintains strict hygiene and silence protocols. It is located directly adjacent to the modern Caracalla Spa. Due to its historic multi-level layout and the nature of the wet surfaces, it has limited accessibility for those with severe mobility impairments.

Best Time to Visit

Weekdays: To avoid the higher density of tourists on weekends.

Evening: For a quieter, more meditative atmosphere.

Facts & Legends

A technical oddity is the natural pressure of the thermal springs; the water flows into the baths directly from the Florentinerberg at a natural temperature of 68°C before being cooled. Mark Twain famously wrote of his experience here: "After 10 minutes you forget time; after 20 minutes you forget the world."
