Calvert Cliffs State Park, Baltimore, USA Maryland, North America
Calvert Cliffs State Park is a geological formation located in Lusby, Maryland, USA.
The park features prominent fossil-bearing cliffs along the Chesapeake Bay.
Visual Characteristics
The cliffs are composed of Miocene epoch marine sediment, primarily sand and clay, exhibiting distinct horizontal layering. Colors range from tan and brown to gray and ochre, with visible strata of shell fragments. The cliff faces reach heights of approximately 60 to 100 feet (18 to 30 meters) above the bay's shoreline. Vegetation density varies, with mature deciduous forest covering the plateau above the cliffs and sparser growth directly on the cliff faces.
Location & Access Logistics
Calvert Cliffs State Park is situated approximately 50 miles (80 km) south of Baltimore, Maryland. Access is via Maryland Route 2 South, turning onto MD 765 South (Hickory Point Road), then onto MD 765 South again (which becomes MD 765 S/Broomes Island Road), and finally turning onto MD 765 S (which becomes MD 765 S/Parkers Creek Road). The park entrance is clearly marked. Parking is available in a designated lot near the park office, with capacity for approximately 100 vehicles. Public transport options are limited; the nearest bus routes do not directly serve the park.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The cliffs are a result of geological uplift and erosion over millions of years, exposing sediments from the Miocene epoch (approximately 23 to 5.3 million years ago). These sediments contain a rich fossil record of marine life, including shark teeth, whale bones, and various invertebrate fossils. The park's ecological classification is coastal plain forest and estuarine shoreline.
Key Highlights & Activities
Fossil hunting is a primary activity, with visitors permitted to collect fossils found on the beach below the cliffs. Hiking is available on marked trails, including the 1.2-mile (1.9 km) Cliffs Trail which leads to the beach. Birdwatching is also popular, particularly during migration seasons. Swimming is permitted in designated areas of the Chesapeake Bay, subject to water quality advisories.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are available at the park entrance and near the main picnic area. Picnic tables and grills are provided. Shade is available in designated picnic areas under mature trees. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally available within the park, though it may be intermittent closer to the cliffs. No food vendors are located within the park; visitors should bring their own provisions.
Best Time to Visit
For fossil hunting, low tide is optimal for beach access and visibility. The best months for pleasant weather are typically April through October. Mid-morning (9:00 AM - 11:00 AM) and late afternoon (3:00 PM - 5:00 PM) offer softer lighting conditions for photography of the cliffs.
Facts & Legends
Calvert Cliffs are one of the most significant fossil sites on the East Coast of the United States. A specific tip for visitors: wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes for walking on the beach and climbing down to it, as the terrain can be uneven and contain sharp shell fragments.
