Facts & Legends
The fort's most famous association is with the defense of Baltimore Harbor during the War of 1812. Following a 25-hour bombardment by British ships, American forces successfully defended the fort. This event inspired Francis Scott Key to write the poem that would become "The Star-Spangled Banner," the U.S. national anthem. A replica of the original 15-star, 15-stripe flag that flew over the fort is displayed.
