There is no direct road access. Parking is available at the departure points in Drake Bay or Sierpe. Public transport to Drake Bay or Sierpe involves buses from San Jose to Palmar Norte, followed by a local bus or taxi to Sierpe, or a flight to Drake Bay airstrip.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The island is a geological formation of volcanic origin, estimated to be millions of years old. It was declared a Biological Reserve in 1978 to protect its rich marine and terrestrial ecosystems, including its coral reefs and diverse wildlife populations.

Key Highlights & Activities

Snorkeling and scuba diving are primary activities, with designated sites around the island. Hiking is permitted on marked trails within the reserve. Wildlife observation, including bird watching and potential marine mammal sightings, is also a key activity. Visitors can observe the island's diverse flora and fauna.

Basic facilities include a ranger station and limited restroom access. There are no food vendors on the island; visitors must bring their own provisions. Cell phone signal is generally unreliable. Shade is available in limited areas near the ranger station and along some beach sections.

Best Time to Visit

The dry season, from December to April, offers the most favorable weather conditions with calmer seas. For marine life viewing, the period from July to November is often recommended due to higher fish concentrations. Visibility for diving and snorkeling is generally best during the morning hours.
