Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve | Puntarenas

The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is a protected biological preserve located in the Tilarán Mountain Range of Costa Rica.

The forest canopy reaches heights of 30-40 meters, composed primarily of broadleaf evergreen trees. The reserve is situated approximately 10 kilometers northwest of the town of Santa Elena. Access is via paved roads from Puntarenas, transitioning to gravel roads closer to the reserve entrance. The final 3 kilometers require a 4x4 vehicle or a shuttle service due to road conditions. Public bus services operate from Puntarenas to Santa Elena, with local taxis or pre-booked shuttles available for the onward journey to the reserve. Parking is available at the reserve's main entrance.

The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve was established in 1972 by the Tropical Science Center and the Monteverde Conservation League. Mid-morning (9:00 AM - 11:00 AM) often provides the best light for photography before the densest fog typically rolls in.
