Location & Access Logistics
Clear Water Bay is situated on the western coast of Koh Rong. Access is primarily via boat from Sihanoukville, with ferry services operating daily. The journey from Sihanoukville pier to Koh Rong pier typically takes 45-60 minutes. From Koh Rong pier, local speedboats or longtail boats can be hired for direct transfer to Clear Water Bay, a journey of approximately 15-20 minutes. There is no direct road access from the main island settlements. Limited parking is available at the Koh Rong pier for those arriving with private vehicles.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Clear Water Bay is a natural coastal formation. Its clear water is attributed to the absence of significant riverine sediment input and the presence of fine, light-colored sand that reflects sunlight. The bay is part of the marine ecosystem of the Gulf of Thailand.
Key Highlights & Activities
Swimming is possible in the calm waters. Snorkeling can be undertaken from the shore, with visibility dependent on water clarity. Kayaking rentals are available from local operators. Beach relaxation is a primary activity.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Basic beachfront bungalows and guesthouses are present. A limited number of small food stalls and beach bars operate seasonally. Restrooms are available at accommodation and dining establishments. Shade is provided by natural tree cover and some constructed awnings. Cell phone signal (2G/3G) is intermittent and unreliable.
Best Time to Visit
The dry season, from November to April, offers the most favorable weather conditions with reduced rainfall and calmer seas. Mid-morning to late afternoon provides optimal sunlight for water clarity and beach activities. High tide is generally preferred for swimming and water sports.
Facts & Legends
The bay's name is derived from the exceptional clarity of its waters, a feature that distinguishes it from other coastal areas on the island. Local folklore suggests that the bay was a favored resting point for ancient mariners due to its calm conditions.
