Sunset Beach, Koh Rong, Cambodia, Asia

Sunset Beach is a coastal area located on the western side of Koh Rong island in Cambodia.

This location is characterized by its long stretch of sand and proximity to the sea.

Visual Characteristics

The beach consists of fine, light-colored sand. The water clarity varies, typically appearing turquoise to deep blue depending on depth and light conditions. The shoreline is bordered by a moderate density of tropical vegetation, including palm trees and various shrubs. No significant rock formations are present along the immediate beach area.

Location & Access Logistics

Sunset Beach is situated on the western coast of Koh Rong, approximately 7 kilometers southwest of Koh Rong Village (also known as Krabey Village). Access is primarily via boat transfer from Koh Rong Village or Sihanoukville. Local longtail boats operate regularly from Koh Rong Village, with a journey time of approximately 20-30 minutes. There is no direct road access from the main village. Limited parking is available at Koh Rong Village for those arriving from the mainland.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Koh Rong island, including Sunset Beach, is part of a larger geological formation of granite and sandstone, characteristic of the Cambodian coastline. Ecologically, it is a tropical coastal environment with a marine ecosystem supporting local fish populations and coral reefs in surrounding waters.

Key Highlights & Activities

Swimming is possible in the sea. Beach lounging and sunbathing are primary activities. Kayaking and paddleboarding rentals are sometimes available from local operators. Observing the sunset is the namesake activity.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Basic amenities may include a small number of beachside bungalows or guesthouses offering limited food and drink services. Restrooms are typically available at these establishments. Shade is provided by natural tree cover and temporary structures. Cell phone signal (2G/3G) is generally available but can be intermittent.

Best Time to Visit

The best time of day for photography is during the late afternoon leading up to sunset, approximately 4:30 PM to 6:00 PM, when the light is softer and the sun is lower. The dry season, from November to April, offers the most favorable weather conditions with less rainfall and lower humidity. High tide is generally suitable for swimming.

Facts & Legends

A local anecdote suggests that the beach was historically used by fishermen as a resting point before their return journeys, though verification is difficult. A practical tip is to bring insect repellent, especially for the evening hours, due to the surrounding vegetation.
