Coral Lagoon, Mellieha, Malta, Europe
The Coral Lagoon is a natural sea cave with a collapsed roof, forming an open-air pool on the northern coast of Malta. It is situated near L-Ahrax Point in the municipality of Mellieha.
Visual Characteristics
The lagoon features a circular opening in the limestone cliff ceiling, approximately 10 to 15 meters in diameter. The water within the lagoon is clear, displaying shades of blue and green. The surrounding rock formations consist of eroded Globigerina Limestone, with sparse coastal vegetation on the clifftops. Access from the sea is via a narrow archway.
Location & Access Logistics
The Coral Lagoon is located on Malta's northern coast, west of L-Ahrax Point. From Mellieha town center, it is approximately 5-6 km North-East. Access by land requires driving towards L-Ahrax tal-Mellieha via Triq L-Ahrax. Parking is available near L-Ahrax Tower, approximately 1.5-2 km from the lagoon. The final approach involves walking over uneven, rocky terrain along the cliffs. Public transport routes (e.g., 41, 42, 221, 222) serve Mellieha Bay, but direct bus service to the immediate vicinity of the lagoon is not available. Sea access is possible by boat through a narrow archway.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The Coral Lagoon is a geological formation resulting from the erosion of Globigerina Limestone. It originated as a sea cave whose roof collapsed due to natural processes, creating the open-air lagoon. This is a karstic feature common in coastal limestone environments.
Key Highlights & Activities
Snorkeling and swimming are possible within the lagoon when sea conditions are calm. Cliff jumping from the surrounding rocks into the lagoon is undertaken by experienced individuals. Photography of the unique geological formation is a primary activity. Kayaking or paddleboarding to the lagoon from nearby bays is also an option.
Infrastructure & Amenities
No restrooms are available at the site. Natural shade is limited to the cliff walls at specific times of day. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally present but can be intermittent. There are no food vendors directly at the lagoon; the nearest facilities are located near L-Ahrax Tower or Mellieha Bay.
Best Time to Visit
The best months for visiting are May through October, offering warmer water temperatures and calmer sea conditions. For optimal photography, mid-morning to early afternoon provides direct sunlight into the lagoon, illuminating the water. Sea access is recommended only on calm days with minimal swell. Land access is safer during dry weather, as rocks can become slippery when wet.
Facts & Legends
Accessing the lagoon from the land involves navigating a small, natural opening in the rock, which can be challenging. Visiting early in the morning typically results in fewer crowds.
