Għajn Tuffieħa Tower is a coastal watchtower situated on the western coast of Malta, within the administrative boundaries of Mellieħa. It functioned as a defensive outpost against corsair raids and served as a communication point within the island's network of coastal fortifications.

Visual Characteristics

The tower is a square-plan structure constructed from local globigerina limestone, exhibiting a robust and unadorned military architectural style typical of the De Redin towers. It features a slightly tapering base and a flat roof, with a single entrance door elevated above ground level, historically accessed via a retractable ladder. The exterior stone is a light ochre to greyish-yellow hue, characteristic of Maltese limestone. Its approximate height is 12 meters from its base to the parapet.

The tower is located on a promontory overlooking Għajn Tuffieħa Bay, approximately 3.5km southwest of Mellieħa town center. Access is primarily via Triq il-Għajn Tuffieħa, which leads directly to the Għajn Tuffieħa Bay area. Limited roadside parking is available near the access path to the tower. Public transport is available via bus route 44, which stops at the "Riviera" bus stop, approximately 0.8km walk from the tower along a paved road and then a dirt path.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Għajn Tuffieħa Tower was constructed in 1658 under the patronage of Grand Master Martin de Redin of the Order of St. John. Its original purpose was to serve as one of 13 coastal watchtowers, providing early warning of approaching enemy vessels and communicating signals to other towers and the capital, Valletta. The tower is situated on a clay slope, a geological feature prone to erosion, overlooking the sandy Għajn Tuffieħa Bay.
