Popeye Village, Mellieha, Malta, Europe
Popeye Village is an entertainment complex and open-air museum constructed from the original film set of the 1980 musical "Popeye." It is situated in Anchor Bay, on the northwestern coast of Malta, near the town of Mellieha.
Visual Characteristics
The village comprises 19 wooden buildings, constructed from logs and planks imported from Holland and Canada. These structures feature brightly colored, cartoon-like facades, including a post office, bakery, barber shop, and Popeye's house. The entire complex is built on a hillside overlooking Anchor Bay, with the buildings clustered around a small inlet, presenting a rustic and whimsical architectural style designed to resemble a 1920s fishing village.
Location & Access Logistics
Popeye Village is located in Anchor Bay, approximately 3 kilometers southwest of Mellieha town center. Access is via Triq Tal-Prajjet, which branches off the main road, Triq Il-Mellieha. A dedicated car park is available on-site for private vehicles. Public transport options include bus route 101, which operates from Mellieha and Cirkewwa, with a stop located near the village entrance.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The site was constructed between 1979 and 1980 as the primary film set for the 1980 musical production "Popeye," starring Robin Williams. The set was designed by Wolf Kroeger. Following the completion of filming, the set was preserved and subsequently converted into a permanent tourist attraction.
Key Highlights & Activities
Visitors can explore the original film set buildings, including Popeye's house and the Post Office. Live character shows featuring Popeye, Olive Oyl, and other characters are performed regularly. During summer months, a lido area provides access for swimming in Anchor Bay. An on-site mini-golf course is available, and the village also houses a Comic Museum.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are available throughout the village. Shade is limited, primarily found within buildings and designated seating areas. Cell phone signal coverage is generally good, with 4G and 5G services available. Several snack bars and a restaurant, Seagull's Restaurant, are located within the village for food and beverage options.
Best Time to Visit
For photography, early morning or late afternoon offers softer light and fewer crowds. The months of May to October provide warm weather suitable for swimming and outdoor activities. November to April typically brings cooler temperatures and fewer tourists. No specific tide requirements affect access or activities.
Facts & Legends
The construction of Popeye Village required the importation of thousands of logs from Holland and Canada, along with eight tons of nails. A breakwater was also specifically constructed in Anchor Bay to protect the film set from rough seas during the seven-month building period.
