Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park, Kanab, USA Utah, North America
Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park is a geological formation located in southwestern Utah, USA, near the Arizona border.
Visual Characteristics
The park features large, undulating sand dunes composed of fine, iron-oxide-rich sand, giving them a distinct coral-pink hue. The sand's color varies with the angle of the sun and moisture content. The dunes are interspersed with sandstone formations and sparse desert vegetation, including juniper and pinyon pine.
Location & Access Logistics
The park is situated approximately 22 miles west of Kanab, Utah. Access is via State Route 43 (Sand Dune Road), a paved road for the initial portion, transitioning to a well-maintained gravel road for the final miles. The park entrance is clearly marked. Ample parking is available at the main visitor area and designated pull-offs. No public transportation services the park directly.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The sand dunes are formed from the erosion of Navajo Sandstone. Wind transports sand particles from the surrounding sandstone formations, depositing them in the valley to create the dunes. This process has been ongoing for thousands of years, resulting in the unique landscape. The park is also a habitat for the Coral Pink Sand Dunes tiger beetle (Cicindela albissima), an insect found nowhere else.
Key Highlights & Activities
Off-highway vehicle (OHV) use is permitted on designated dune areas. Hiking is possible on trails and across the dunes. Photography is a popular activity, particularly during sunrise and sunset when the light accentuates the sand's color. Camping is available at the park's campground.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The park provides a visitor center with restrooms and information. Picnic tables are available. Shade structures are present in the main day-use area. Cell phone signal is intermittent within the park.
Best Time to Visit
For photography, early morning and late afternoon offer the best lighting conditions for the sand's color. The months of April, May, September, and October generally provide the most comfortable temperatures for outdoor activities. Summer months can be extremely hot.
Facts & Legends
The unique pink color of the sand is due to iron oxide particles derived from the weathering of the surrounding Navajo Sandstone. A specific tip for visitors is to wear closed-toe shoes, as the fine sand can easily get into footwear.
