Construction of Cove Fort began in 1867 and was completed in 1868. It was built under the direction of Brigham Young, then President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, to provide a safe stopping point for travelers and a defense against potential conflicts with Native American tribes. The site is located on a basaltic lava flow.
