Deans Blue Hole, Andros Island, Bahamas, North America
Deans Blue Hole is a saltwater-filled sinkhole located on the west side of Andros Island in the Bahamas. It is recognized as the world's deepest known blue hole.
Visual Characteristics
The sinkhole features a circular opening with a diameter of approximately 30-35 meters (98-115 feet) at the surface. The water color transitions from a light turquoise near the edges to a deep indigo in the central, deeper sections. The surrounding area consists of exposed limestone rock formations and sparse, low-lying vegetation.
Location & Access Logistics
Deans Blue Hole is situated approximately 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) southwest of the settlement of Clarence Town. Access is via a dirt road branching off the main Queen's Highway. Parking is available at a small, unpaved lot adjacent to the site. No public transport directly serves the blue hole; private vehicle or taxi is required.
Historical & Ecological Origin
This geological feature is a karstic sinkhole, formed by the dissolution of soluble bedrock, primarily limestone, over geological time. Its formation predates the current sea level, with the current inundation occurring as sea levels rose after the last glacial period.
Key Highlights & Activities
The primary activity is freediving and scuba diving. The hole descends to a depth of approximately 203 meters (663 feet). Snorkeling is possible in the shallower rim area. Observation from the rim is also a common activity.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Basic amenities include a small parking area. There are no permanent restroom facilities or food vendors directly at the site. Cell phone signal is generally available (4G/5G).
Best Time to Visit
For optimal visibility for diving and photography, the late morning to early afternoon hours (10:00 AM to 2:00 PM) offer the best natural light penetration. The dry season, from December to May, generally provides calmer weather conditions. Tidal influence on visibility is minimal due to the depth and enclosed nature of the hole.
Facts & Legends
Deans Blue Hole has served as the venue for the annual Vertical Blue freediving competition, attracting elite freedivers from around the globe. A local legend suggests the hole is inhabited by a mythical sea creature, though no scientific evidence supports this.
