Windward Beach, Andros Island, Bahamas, North America
Windward Beach is a coastal area situated on the eastern side of Andros Island in the Bahamas.
This location provides access to the Atlantic Ocean's waters.
Visual Characteristics
The beach consists of fine, white coral sand. The water exhibits a clear, turquoise hue, transitioning to deeper blue further offshore. The shoreline is fringed by a moderate density of coconut palms and sea grape trees.
Location & Access Logistics
Windward Beach is located approximately 15 kilometers east of the main settlement of Fresh Creek on Andros Island. Access is via Queen's Highway, turning onto a unpaved track approximately 1 kilometer south of the Central Andros Airport (TZ5). The track is approximately 2 kilometers long and is generally passable by standard vehicles, though high clearance is recommended after heavy rain. Limited informal parking is available at the beach terminus. No public transport services operate directly to this location.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The beach is a natural accumulation of carbonate sediments, primarily derived from the breakdown of coral reefs and shells. It is part of the Andros Barrier Reef system, one of the largest in the Western Hemisphere, which influences the coastal geomorphology and marine life.
Key Highlights & Activities
Swimming is possible in the shallow nearshore waters. Beachcombing for shells is a common activity. Observation of marine bird species is possible along the coastline.
Infrastructure & Amenities
No permanent infrastructure or amenities are present at Windward Beach. Restrooms, shade structures, and food vendors are not available. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is intermittent and unreliable.
Best Time to Visit
For photography, early morning (07:00-09:00) offers direct sunlight on the water. Midday provides the clearest water visibility. The dry season, from December to May, generally offers the most favorable weather conditions with lower humidity and less rainfall.
Facts & Legends
Local folklore suggests that the clear waters of Windward Beach are a gateway to the "Challenger Deep," a mythical underwater realm, though this is not scientifically supported. The beach is known for its relatively calm waters due to the protective barrier reef offshore.
