The Dolphin Research Center is an educational and research facility dedicated to marine mammal science, located in Marathon, Florida Keys, USA.

It serves as a hub for public education on dolphin behavior and conservation efforts.

Visual Characteristics

The facility comprises several large, saltwater habitats designed to house bottlenose dolphins. Structures include concrete pools, filtration systems, and observation areas. The primary buildings are constructed with concrete and metal roofing, painted in neutral tones. The surrounding landscape features tropical vegetation, including palm trees and mangroves.

Location & Access Logistics

The Dolphin Research Center is situated at 58901 Overseas Highway, Marathon, FL 33050. It is approximately 50 miles (80 km) southeast of Miami and 45 miles (72 km) northeast of Key West. Access is directly from the Overseas Highway (US-1). Ample parking is available on-site, free of charge. The nearest public transport is the Keys Shuttle bus service, with a stop approximately 1 mile from the center.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Founded in 1955 by Milton C. Shedd and his wife, Eugenie Clark, the center was initially established as the "Living Seas" exhibit for the 1964 New York World's Fair. It relocated to its current Florida Keys location in 1970. The facility is built on reclaimed land within the Florida Keys reef tract ecosystem.

Key Highlights & Activities

Activities include educational presentations on dolphin biology and conservation, interactive programs allowing supervised contact with dolphins (e.g., "Dolphin Encounter"), and observation of daily training sessions. Guided tours of the facility are available. Visitors can learn about the research conducted on dolphin cognition and communication.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available. Shaded areas are provided in visitor zones and around habitats. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally good within the facility. On-site food vendors are not present, but nearby restaurants are accessible within a short drive in Marathon.

Best Time to Visit

The center is open daily from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. For optimal viewing of dolphin activity, mid-morning and mid-afternoon sessions are recommended. The weather is most favorable between November and May, avoiding the peak hurricane season and intense summer heat.

Facts & Legends

The Dolphin Research Center is one of the oldest and largest facilities in the world dedicated to dolphin research and education. A unique aspect is their "Dolphin Labor Union," a playful concept representing the dolphins' structured daily routines and interactions.
