Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park is a 56-acre state park located at the southern tip of Key West, Florida, USA.

Visual Characteristics

The park features a 19th-century brick fort constructed from coquina stone and brick. The fort walls are approximately 5 feet thick and rise to a height of 26 feet. The surrounding landscape includes a shoreline with a mix of sand and coral rubble, and a dense canopy of tropical vegetation, primarily sea grape and palm trees.

Location & Access Logistics

The park is situated at the western end of Truman Avenue in Key West. It is approximately 3 miles from the Key West International Airport and 1 mile from the historic Old Town. Access is via Truman Avenue, which becomes Southard Street. Parking is available within the park, with a fee per vehicle. Public transportation options include the Key West City Bus system, with Route 1 stopping near the park entrance.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Fort Zachary Taylor was constructed between 1845 and 1866 as part of the Third System of coastal defenses for the United States. Its original purpose was to defend the strategic harbor of Key West. The fort is built on a foundation of coral rock and limestone. The park's shoreline is a natural formation, with the beach composed of eroded coral and shell fragments.

Key Highlights & Activities

Visitors can explore the historic fort, including its casemates and gun emplacements. The park offers swimming and snorkeling opportunities in designated areas, particularly around the rocky outcrops. A 0.5-mile paved path is available for walking and cycling. Fishing is permitted from the seawall. Interpretive programs are offered by park staff.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available near the beach and picnic areas. Shaded picnic pavilions are located throughout the park. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally available. Food vendors are not present within the park, but concessions are available at the adjacent beach area.

Best Time to Visit

The best time of day for photography of the fort is in the late afternoon when the light is softer. The months of March through May offer the most pleasant weather, with lower humidity and average temperatures in the low 80s Fahrenheit. Snorkeling conditions are best during calm seas, typically in the morning.

Facts & Legends

During the Civil War, Fort Zachary Taylor remained under Union control, serving as a vital naval base. A unique aspect of the fort's construction is the use of ballast stones from ships that visited Key West, incorporated into the foundation. The park's beach is known for its clear water, making it one of the better snorkeling spots in Key West.
