The Dutch Reformed Church is a historical religious structure located in Galle, Sri Lanka. It is situated within the Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The church is constructed primarily from coral stone and granite. Its exterior walls are whitewashed, contrasting with the dark, timber-framed roof. The building features a rectangular floor plan with a prominent bell tower at the western end. Arched windows and doorways are characteristic of its colonial architectural style.

The church is located within the Galle Fort, accessible via the main entrance on Hospital Street. Galle Fort is approximately 115 kilometers south of Colombo. Parking is available within the fort, though spaces can be limited during peak hours. Several local bus routes terminate at Galle city, with onward connections to the fort area. Taxis and tuk-tuks are readily available from Galle town to the fort entrance.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Construction of the Dutch Reformed Church began in 1752 and was completed in 1755. It was built by the Dutch East India Company during their colonial rule of Ceylon. The original purpose was to serve the Dutch Protestant community residing within the Galle Fort.

Visitors can observe the preserved interior, including the pulpit and baptismal font. The churchyard contains historical gravestones. Photography of the exterior and interior is permitted.

The best time of day for exterior photography is in the late afternoon, when the sunlight casts longer shadows. The dry season, from December to March, offers the most favorable weather conditions for visiting Galle.

Facts & Legends

A notable feature is the large, ornate tombstone of Johanna Magdalena van Rhee, wife of the Dutch Governor, which is integrated into the church floor. It is said that the original bell of the church was cast in 1760 and has a distinctive tone.
