Flag Rock Bastion is a coastal fortification located in Galle, Sri Lanka. It is situated at the southeastern extremity of Galle Fort.
Visual Characteristics
The bastion is constructed from granite blocks. Its primary structure is a low, thick wall with crenellations. The exterior faces the Indian Ocean, with exposed rock formations at its base. The color of the stone is a weathered grey, with patches of lichen growth.

Flag Rock Bastion is accessible from Hospital Street within Galle Fort. It is approximately 1.5 km from the Galle Fort main entrance. Parking is available within Galle Fort, with several paid parking lots. Public transport within Galle Fort is limited to walking or bicycle rickshaws. The nearest bus stop is outside the main fort entrance.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The bastion was constructed by the Dutch in the 17th century as part of the defensive fortifications of Galle Fort. Its original purpose was to guard the entrance to Galle Harbour and provide artillery support. The geological origin of the coastline is sedimentary rock formations.

A local legend states that a signal flag was flown from this point to warn ships of approaching storms. Historically, it served as a strategic observation post for naval movements.
