Fort Point National Historic Site, San Francisco, USA California, North America

Fort Point National Historic Site is a preserved 19th-century military fortification located at the southern end of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, California.

This brick masonry fort served as a coastal defense installation for San Francisco Bay.

Visual Characteristics

The fort is constructed primarily of red brick, arranged in three tiers of casemates. It features granite sally ports and a central courtyard. The exterior walls are approximately 4 feet thick. The structure stands at three stories high.

Location & Access Logistics

Fort Point is situated at the base of the Golden Gate Bridge. Access is via Marine Drive from Highway 101. The site is approximately 3 miles northwest of the San Francisco city center. Parking is available in a designated lot adjacent to the fort, with capacity for approximately 50 vehicles. Public transport options include Muni bus lines 28 and 29, with a walk of approximately 0.5 miles from the nearest stops.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Construction of Fort Point began in 1853 and was completed in 1861. It was designed by Captain Montgomery C. Meigs and built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Its original purpose was to defend the San Francisco Bay from naval attack.

Key Highlights & Activities

Visitors can explore the fort's interior, including casemates and powder magazines. Ranger-led interpretive programs are offered daily. Photography of the fort and the Golden Gate Bridge is permitted. Access to the ramparts provides views of the bay and the bridge.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available within the fort. Limited shade is provided by the fort's structure. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally available. No food vendors are located on-site; nearest options are outside the immediate vicinity.

Best Time to Visit

For photography, the late afternoon offers favorable lighting conditions on the brickwork. The months of September and October typically provide the clearest weather. High tide can offer more dramatic wave action against the fort's base.

Facts & Legends

During the Civil War, Fort Point was garrisoned by Union troops, though no Confederate ships ever threatened San Francisco Bay. A local anecdote suggests that the fort's construction was so robust that it was believed to be earthquake-proof, a notion later disproven by seismic events.
