Historical & Ecological Origin
Construction began in 1933 and the bridge opened in 1936. It was designed by a team of engineers led by Charles H. Purcell. Its original purpose was to provide a direct vehicular and rail link across the bay, replacing ferry services. The bridge was built on a foundation of pilings driven into the bay floor.

Facts & Legends
During its construction, the Bay Bridge was the largest bridge project undertaken by the state of California. A unique aspect of its design is the Yerba Buena Island Tunnel, which passes through the island and connects the suspension and cantilever sections.
